Real-world use case
You want to follow the latest developments of CyanogenMod's successor: here's how to install LineageOS 14.1 nightly on OnePlus One.
LineageOS
LineageOS is the successor to the alternative, free CyanogenMod system running on Android. It currently builds on the foundations of CyanogenMod following the shutdown of the Cyanogen company. The idea is to return to the roots of CyanogenMod before 2013, a system whose development relies solely on the volunteer work of developers, also avoiding intellectual property issues. LineageOS therefore ensures continuity of the original project as well as its own improvements, and it will be usable on a large number of devices, just like its predecessor.
The following article covers an unstable install of LineageOS, a nightly build dated January 23, 2017. That said, it works perfectly in my case and is much faster than my CyanogenMod 13.
Steps to get LineageOS 14.1 nightly
Before you start, be aware that your phone will lose all of its data, so back it up first. Here are the steps needed to kick off the ROM switch:
- Unlock the bootloader and install a recovery (TWRP): follow these steps.
- Download LineageOS 14.1 nightly and the Google Apps (nano in my case).
- Boot into recovery mode, then perform the installation of LineageOS 14.1 nightly and the Google Apps via TWRP.
- Reboot your OnePlus One smartphone to discover Android 7.1.1 running LineageOS.
If you run into trouble, feel free to refer to the automatic method for installing the bootloader and Recovery via the tool: OnePlus One Toolbox V6 (see my earlier article).
Root access with SuperSu on LineageOS
To make the most of the smartphone, rooting with SuperSu is possible on LineageOS. Here is the link to the official site; then download the flashable Recovery:
Latest (V2.79):
- Recovery Flashable.zip MD5:f4ecbf5814215bf569ff3324fc1c91f5
Then boot into TWRP Recovery mode and proceed with installing SuperSu, just like you did for installing the Gapps.
TWRP recovery
Finally, if you'd like, I invite you to update your TWRP recovery via the TWRP app.
